Soap Opera, The Commons, and Sarnies Put Hands to Deliver Hygiene Support to BCHF Foundation.
BANGKOK, THAILAND — What begins as used cooking oil in restaurant kitchens is finding new purpose in the hands of Bangkok’s most vulnerable communities.
Through a new partnership between Soap Opera Bangkok and the Bangkok Community Help Foundation (BCHF), recycled cooking oil is being transformed into soap and distributed to low-income communities, migrant workers, and vulnerable people across Bangkok. The initiative combines circular sustainability with social impact, reducing waste while improving access to essential hygiene products.
The collaboration began with a joint visit to BCHF’s Center of Dreams, where the Soap Opera Founder, Ms Mariya Kalita, and the Volunteer Coordinator, Katy Rauch, from both organizations met with social workers to better understand community needs and explore opportunities for long-term cooperation. The group later visited Mercy Center, where they met Soap Opera’s community soap makers, and saw firsthand how used cooking oil collected from restaurants and hospitality partners is transformed into soap.
Ms. Kalita said that she is happy to see businesses joining the campaign, with The Commons being at the origin of this initiative, and the new partner Sarnies becoming a cycle partners for Soap Opera Social.
Following the visit, Soap Opera donated an initial batch of soap to BCHF with over 1,000 bars of soap distributed by the BCHF volunteers. The soaps will support communities across Bangkok, including migrant workers in On Nut, residents of the 70 Rai low-income community, people living at the Maen Sri Waterworks homeless camp, families in the Roong Moo community, and beneficiaries reached through BCHF’s ongoing outreach programs.
The collaboration demonstrates how a circular economy can create impact far beyond waste reduction. Used cooking oil is transformed into soap by community producers, creating livelihood opportunities while ultimately supporting people with limited access to basic hygiene products.

Looking ahead, Soap Opera and BCHF are excited to deepen their relationship through regular soap distributions, closer collaboration with social workers, and future opportunities to expand community participation through Soap Opera’s livelihood program.
By connecting businesses, community producers, and nonprofit organizations, the partnership demonstrates how sustainability can create tangible benefits for both people and the environment.
